Johannes Schoombee LLD

Johannes Schoombee is an experienced lawyer who has been at the Independent Bar in Perth for 30 years until his retirement in mid 2026. He practised at the highest level in a number of areas such as commercial litigation, and administrative and environmental law. He has acted as leading counsel in many complex trials, applications and mediations, and has appeared in some 50 reported decisions, including in the High Court.


Currently he accepts instructions to act as an arbitrator or mediator, and does legal research. He is a former South African Rhodes Scholar who holds law degrees from the Universities of Stellenbosch, Oxford and Cape Town, where he obtained a Doctorate in Law (LLD). He is also admitted to the South African Bar, and as a barrister of the Inner Temple, London.


Presently he combines his interest in law with that in wine. He holds the Diploma in Wine awarded by the Wine and Spirits Educational Trust of London, and a Champagne Masters from from the US Wine Scholars Guild. He has travelled extensively in wine regions of the world over many years.
